Swindon Sewage Treatment Works – GRP Odour Control Covers
Wastewater treatment – inlet works odour control
This project involved the supply of GRP walk-on odour control covers and associated access infrastructure for new inlet works at Swindon Sewage Treatment Works, delivered for Thames Water.
Project Overview
- Industry: Wastewater Treatment
- Location: Swindon Sewage Treatment Works, Swindon, UK
- End Client: Thames Water
- Project Scope: New inlet works odour control and access infrastructure
The project formed part of an upgrade to the existing sewage treatment facility, requiring odour containment and safe access across the new inlet works. GRP systems were specified to suit the operational demands and environmental conditions associated with wastewater treatment processes.

Project Requirements
The new inlet works required odour control solutions capable of supporting safe operational access while containing emissions within a demanding wastewater environment.
Key requirements included:
- Walk-on odour control covers suitable for regular personnel access
- Defined load ratings for covers and handrails
- Resistance to corrosion and moisture
- Slip-resistant walking surfaces
- Compatibility with the inlet channel layout and associated plant equipment
All systems were required to meet Thames Water safety and performance standards.
Installed GRP Solution
PJNC supplied GRP odour control and access systems across the inlet works, including:
- 400 m² of GRP walk-on odour control covers
- 100 m of GRP handrail
The systems were configured to provide continuous coverage across the inlet channel while maintaining safe access for inspection and maintenance activities.

Technical & Design Requirements
The GRP systems were designed to meet the following technical criteria:
- Walk-on odour control covers: load rated to 5 kN/m²
- Handrails: load rated to 0.36 kN/m
- Slip-resistant walking surfaces suitable for wet conditions
- Corrosion-resistant materials appropriate for wastewater exposure
- Structural stability across access and containment areas
These requirements ensured compliance across the inlet works installation.
Installation & Delivery
GRP components were delivered to site in prefabricated sections to support efficient handling and installation. Installation was coordinated alongside inlet works construction activities, allowing safe sequencing and minimising disruption within the operational treatment environment.

Outcome & In-Service Performance
The completed GRP odour control and access systems now provide effective containment across the inlet works while supporting safe operational access. The non-corrosive construction and defined load ratings support long-term performance in a high-moisture wastewater environment with reduced maintenance requirements.
