Southend Water Recycle Plant – GRP Odour Control Covers

Sewage treatment – main pump station odour control

This project involved the supply of GRP odour control covers for the main pump station at Southend Water Recycle Plant, delivered for Anglian Water.

Project Overview

  • Industry: Sewage Treatment
  • Location: Southend-on-Sea, Essex, UK
  • End Client: Anglian Water
  • Project Scope: Main pump station odour control

The project required odour containment solutions for the main pump station within an operational water recycling facility. GRP odour control covers were specified to provide effective containment while accommodating the structural and access constraints of the existing pump station arrangement.

Project Requirements

The main pump station environment required odour control systems capable of operating reliably while being suspended from an existing walkway structure. Key requirements included:

  • Odour containment across the main pump station
  • Covers suspended from the existing main walkway structure
  • Defined load rating suitable for operational conditions
  • Compatibility with existing structural steelwork
  • Durable construction suitable for long-term exposure within a sewage treatment environment

All systems were required to comply with Anglian Water safety and performance standards.

Installed GRP Solution

PJNC supplied GRP odour control covers to suit the suspended installation arrangement, including:

  • 180 m² of GRP odour control covers

The covers were configured to integrate with the existing walkway structure while providing continuous odour containment across the pump station area.

Technical & Design Requirements

The GRP odour control system was designed to meet the following criteria:

  • Design load: 1 kN/m²
  • Covers suspended from the main walkway structure
  • Structural compatibility with existing access systems
  • Corrosion-resistant materials suitable for sewage treatment exposure
  • Stable, secure fixing arrangement for suspended installation

These requirements ensured the system performed reliably within the constraints of the existing infrastructure.

Installation & Delivery

GRP odour control covers were delivered to site in prefabricated sections to support controlled handling and installation. Installation was carried out within the live pump station environment, with sequencing coordinated to maintain safe access and minimise disruption to ongoing operations.

Outcome & In-Service Performance

The completed GRP odour control covers now provide effective containment across the main pump station at Southend Water Recycle Plant. The suspended system integrates with the existing walkway structure, supporting long-term performance and reduced maintenance within a demanding sewage treatment environment.
