GRP Subsea Protection Flooring

High-impact GRP protection for subsea pipelines and equipment

PJNC designed and supplied GRP subsea protection flooring to safeguard pipelines and other critical equipment on the seabed. The system was developed for use in harsh offshore environments where impact protection, durability and efficient installation are essential.

Project Requirement

Protection was required for subsea pipelines and associated equipment located on the seabed. The solution needed to withstand impact loading while integrating with fabricated steel protection covers commonly used in offshore applications.

Additional constraints included offshore handling limitations and the need to minimise installation time and lifting requirements in environments where crane operations are carried out far from seaports.

The GRP Solution

High-impact GRP open mesh flooring was selected as the protective element within the subsea cover system. GRP provided a suitable solution due to its strength, durability and compatibility with fabricated steel protection structures.

The lightweight nature of the GRP flooring reduced the overall weight of the protection system, supporting safer and more efficient offshore installation while delivering long-term performance in aggressive subsea conditions.

Key Design & Engineering Considerations

The subsea protection flooring was engineered to perform as part of a composite protection system while meeting impact performance requirements.

Key design considerations included:

  • Integration with fabricated steel protection covers
  • Impact resistance suitable for subsea environments
  • Structural performance under seabed loading conditions
  • Compatibility with offshore handling and installation processes

The GRP flooring was successfully tested to impact levels of 2.75 kJ and 5 kJ, validating its suitability for protecting critical subsea assets.

Fabrication & Installation

The GRP flooring panels were manufactured off site and supplied ready for integration into fabricated steel protection covers. This modular approach supported efficient handling and assembly within offshore fabrication and installation workflows.

The reduced system weight contributed to faster deployment and improved control during offshore installation operations.

Performance & Suitability

The completed subsea protection system provides reliable impact protection for pipelines and equipment on the seabed. The GRP flooring delivers long-term durability in harsh offshore environments while supporting efficient installation and ongoing asset protection.
